Catherine Matravers
Only child of Lord Andrew Matravers Earl of Hereford. Presumed consumptive in childhood, she was packed off to Geneva College for its rarefied atmosphere rather than its academic standing; as it turned out, her consistent ill-health, pallor and abstracted diffidence were the result of overbearing parents rather than a disease, and a Geneva education remedied that quite thoroughly.
Catherine (Kitty to her parents, Kate to nobility, Cat for all other purposes) is perfectly confident that, once her father has been good enough to die, her abilities will catapult her swiftly to the highest positions of Avalon's government; the realism of this view is, for now, an academic matter, as Lord Andrew is barely fifty and remains in distressingly good health. Until this situation undergoes a decisive shift, Cat sees no reason to hang around the Avalon court being told what to do; she is therefore taking an extended Tour, which has only recently progressed beyond Montaigne. Periodically her parents demand that she cease besmirching the family name/return home at once/marry someone godawful/all the above, adding various incentives commensurate with their paucity of spirit.
Cat has appeared at Geneva College ostensibly as a distinguished and deep-pocketed alumnus considering endowing a chair or some scholarships or something; in fact, she is there partly because the situation in Montaigne, which was quite exciting when she arrived, is rapidly turning very nasty for foreigners and nobility; and partly because her latest stipend is distressingly late. She doesn't know whether her parents have cut her off again, or if some sans-culotte bandit has intercepted the payment; until then, she needs bed, board and possibly a small loan against future patronage.
