Citadel & Rabat

<< Previous page

Just like Malta, Gozo has a walled bastion next to a town called Rabat. It seems possible that this too is a scheme to confuse invading armies. However, the Citadel on Gozo is purely a fortress, not a full-fledged city like Mdina.

I have no idea what that intriguing conical hill in the distance is.

Our guide book says there's a nearby plateau that is actually higher than the Citadel. The closer one in this picture looks too low, so maybe it's the one in the distance. The Knights always worried that this might be used as a base for siege engines, but luckily that never happened. Seems like they might just have built the Citadel on this plateau in the first place—but, you know, Knights.

Fittingly, the Citadel also contains Gozo's cathedral. This was originally intended to have a suitably impressive dome, but when funds grew scarce they had to cut a few corners, as it were. Ironically this makes it one of the more amusing churches to visit.
